Ridgefield is a picturesque, progressive community in the southwestern corner of Connecticut. The downtown area, with its old-fashioned streets and architecture, seems untouched by time. Ridgefield is historical. Ridgefield's history began in 1708 when five men form Norwalk, Connecticut purchased 20,000 acres of land from the Ramapoo Indians and called it Ridgefield. Thirty-five families joined the first five men, making their homes along Main Street. Ridgefield remained a farming village after the Civil War and eventually evolved into a resort community for the wealthy from NYC. Irish and Italian immigrants were hired to work on the estates. Their descendants became leaders in local affairs and businesses, and today many of them continue to comprise the diverse community that is Ridgefield. Ridgefield currently has a population of 23,000+ and covering over 34 square miles. Ridgefield is famous for its handsome Main Street, which stretches more than a mile long, is lined with a wealth of stately homes, towering trees, antique shops, boutiques, museums, churches and country inns. The Ridgefield Library is open seven days a week and offers extensive collection of literature, periodicals, reference materials, and children's books.
